66% of the total apps had intrusive permissions that are defined as ‘dangerous’ in the official Android developer documentation. 25% ask for the location access, approx 38% would ask for personal information related to device. Other potential permissions include camera, contacts, SMS, mic, etc.
Issues with source code were quite common. Approximately 95 apps had functions with privacy abuses which is not expected from a VPN app. Of all these 95, 87 VPN apps had function for getLastKnownLocation which determines the last known location of a particular device. This is a threat to the privacy of the user.
Approximately more than 25% i.e.; 38 out of 150apps were tested positive for DNS leaks. 4 apps suffered from WebRTC leaks and 2 from all three types of known leaks. DNS, IP address, WebRTC. These leaks could expose IP address of the user connected to VPN.
Out of all 150, 18% apps failed the virus and malware scans which proves that free VPN apps are not reliable at all.
