Security Tips for Windows 10

In terms of internal security features, Windows 10 performs better than its predecessors. But do not rely on the specifications, but increase the system security through individual adjustments.

Top 6 Security Tips for Windows 10

Right after installing Windows 10, it’s not just about setting up the new operating system and getting to know its strengths, but you should also consider the following advice.

1. Set secure account password

Whether you log in to the system with your Microsoft ID or a local Windows account. In both cases, set a strong password, even if it takes a little more time to enter. It should consist of mixed-case uppercase and lowercase letters and special characters, and be at least 10 characters long. When entering the password hint, make sure that it really only helps you and not strangers.

2. Check automatic system updates

Windows 10 TP is preconfigured for automatic system updates, so it loads and installs Microsoft- supplied Windows updates without user intervention. You should regularly check the maintenance center or the PC settings under “Update / Restore” to ensure that the automatic update is active. After installing updates, Windows waits two days for the system to restart the PC to make any security updates effective. During these two days, Windows remains unprotected despite the update. Therefore, do not wait for security-related updates to see Windows automatically restart. Perform the restart after such updates even in a timely manner.

3. Activate picture code instead of a password

In Windows 10, as an alternative to a password, you can also log onto a photo with a picture code, i.e. a previously defined finger or mouse gesture – this is ideal for devices with a touch function, but it also works on the desktop PC. The image code can be set in the PC settings directly under the password. Pick a photo from your collection and then draw three gestures anywhere on it. These can be circles, lines, or swipes. If you have forgotten the gestures later, you can also log in with your password.

4. Customize notifications

Windows 10 displays personal information on the lock screen and in the new notification center, depending on the settings you have made, such as incoming mails, upcoming calendar appointments, and app installs and updates. Often, this information is not intended for a stranger’s eyes. Right-click on the notification icon in the tray and click “Hide notifications for” to hide the display of notifications for one, three or eight hours. By clicking on “Personalization” in the settings window, you can selectively switch off the notifications on the screen for apps as well.

5. Import app updates

Updates for apps from the Windows Store are not automatically performed as part of Windows updates but managed separately from the system updates. Start the Windows Store with the green icon. Open the bar after a mouse click on the top left corner on the three dashes and “Settings”. Under “App Updates”, you can set Windows to automatically perform app updates in the background as well.

6. Use VPN

Finally, using a VPN is best of all the precautionary measures to keep your data protected in Windows 10 at all times. When it comes to a VPN, VPNshazam is the choice of many users due to its premium service at a reasonable rate.
